What is a HEIC file?
HEIC is the photo format iPhones and iPads use by default when the camera is set to High Efficiency. It stores a photo in roughly half the space of a JPEG, but many Windows PCs, Android phones and upload forms cannot open it. Turning the photos into a PDF gives you one file that opens everywhere.
Getting HEIC photos off your iPhone
AirDrop to a Mac and Mail attachments usually keep the original .heic files. When you copy photos to a Windows PC with a cable, iOS converts them to JPEG unless Settings › Photos › Transfer to Mac or PC is set to Keep Originals. Either way, this tool accepts the files you end up with.
To make your iPhone take JPEG photos from now on, go to Settings › Camera › Formats and choose Most Compatible.
A Live Photo is a still image plus a short video. Only the still image goes into the PDF.
