Which image formats work
Format | How it goes into the PDF |
|---|---|
JPG, JPEG, JFIF | Placed as it is, without being compressed again |
PNG, GIF, BMP | Lossless, pixel for pixel |
WebP | Lossless and transparent WebP stay lossless; photos are stored as high-quality JPEG |
HEIC, HEIF (iPhone) | Decoded in your browser and stored as high-quality JPEG |
TIFF | Every page of a multi-page TIFF becomes its own PDF page |
AVIF | Works in browsers that can open AVIF, which includes current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari |
An animated GIF has many frames, but a PDF page is still, so only the first frame is placed.
Photos from a phone camera can make a large PDF. If it is too big to email or upload, run it through Compress PDF.
Image to PDF questions

JPG, JPEG, JFIF, PNG, HEIC, HEIF, WebP, GIF, BMP, TIFF and AVIF. You can mix formats in the same PDF.

What happens to an animated GIF?
Only its first frame is placed in the PDF, because a PDF page cannot animate.
